A detailed seventeenth-century etching by Cornelis Visscher, depicting a pastoral scene of cattle and riders crossing a brook.
This etching by Cornelis Visscher depicts a pastoral scene, a subject popular among Dutch artists of the seventeenth century. The composition features a group of cattle and goats navigating a shallow brook, accompanied by two figures on horseback. One rider holds a long staff, guiding the animals, while the other figure appears to be observing the crossing. In the background, the silhouette of a ruined structure sits atop a rocky outcrop, providing a sense of distance and atmosphere to the scene.
Visscher was a skilled printmaker, and this work demonstrates his ability to render texture and light through line work. The etching technique allows for varied line weights, which define the musculature of the animals, the folds of the riders' clothing, and the rugged terrain. The artist has used cross-hatching to create shadows, giving the print a sense of volume and depth. The inscription in the upper left corner, 'Berghem Delin. C. de Visscher f.', indicates that Visscher based this print on a drawing by Nicolaes Berchem, a contemporary known for his Italianate pastoral subjects.
This print captures a moment of daily rural life, a common theme in Dutch art of the period. The interaction between the figures and the animals is rendered with naturalism, reflecting the interest in observing the world. The print is part of a series, as evidenced by the number '3' in the lower right corner. It offers a glimpse into the collaborative nature of print production during the Dutch Golden Age, where engravers often translated the compositions of painters into reproducible media for a wider audience.
