A detailed etching by Dutch Golden Age artist Nicolaes Berchem, depicting a herdsman and his livestock resting beneath a tree in a pastoral setting.
Nicolaes Berchem was a prolific figure of the Dutch Golden Age, known for his mastery of the pastoral genre. This etching, The Resting Herd, demonstrates his technical precision and his ability to capture the quietude of rural life. The composition is anchored by a large, gnarled tree under which a herdsman rests, his figure partially obscured by the trunk. Surrounding him is a collection of livestock, including cattle, goats, and a ram, all rendered with careful attention to their physical forms and textures.
Berchem utilised the etching medium to create a range of tonal values, from the fine, delicate lines of the foliage to the deeper, more robust cross-hatching used to define the musculature of the animals. The scene is typical of the Italianate style that Berchem adopted following his travels to Italy. He often populated his works with animals and figures in a manner that suggests a Mediterranean climate, even when the subjects remain rooted in the traditions of Dutch printmaking. The sense of space is achieved through the subtle graduation of line weight, which guides the eye from the foreground animals back towards the distant, hazy horizon.
This print reflects the period's fascination with the idealised countryside, a theme that resonated with contemporary collectors who sought to bring the tranquility of the outdoors into their homes. Berchem's ability to balance the anatomical accuracy of the animals with a composed, harmonious arrangement makes this work a representative example of his graphic output. The signature, located in the upper right corner, confirms his authorship and his pride in the execution of the plate. It remains a clear example of the skill required to produce such detailed work during the seventeenth century, providing a window into the artistic priorities of the era.
