A classic 1893 lithographic poster by Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec, capturing the theatrical energy of the Parisian café-concert performer Caudieux.
This lithographic poster by Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec depicts the café-concert performer Caudieux in a characteristic stride across the stage. Created in 1893, the work captures the essence of Parisian nightlife during the fin de siècle period. Toulouse-Lautrec employs his signature style, defined by bold, flat areas of colour and strong, sweeping outlines that simplify the subject into a graphic icon. The composition is deliberately asymmetrical, with the figure of Caudieux dominating the frame while his legs appear to exit the picture plane, creating a sense of kinetic energy and movement.
The artist uses a limited palette, relying on the contrast between the deep black of the performer's evening suit and the pale, neutral background. A small, secondary figure is visible in the lower right, providing a sense of scale and context to the stage environment. The typography for the name 'Caudieux' is integrated into the upper left, mirroring the curves of the performer's posture. Toulouse-Lautrec was deeply involved in the printmaking process, often working closely with master printers to achieve the specific textures and colour saturations seen in his posters. This piece reflects his interest in the theatricality of the cabaret, where he frequently observed performers from the audience to inform his sketches. The work remains a primary example of how commercial advertising in late nineteenth-century Paris merged with fine art techniques to create a new visual language for the urban public.
