A classic High Renaissance painting by Andrea del Sarto, depicting an allegorical scene of Charity with three children, rendered with soft light and balanced form.
Andrea del Sarto painted this work in 1518 during his brief tenure at the court of King Francis I in France. The composition depicts a central female figure, representing the virtue of Charity, surrounded by three children. Her posture is calm, and her gaze is directed downward toward the infant she holds. The artist employs a soft, sfumato technique to model the figures, creating smooth transitions between light and shadow that define the musculature of the children and the folds of the drapery.
The colour palette is notable for its use of saturated pinks, deep blues, and warm golden tones. The figures are arranged in a triangular formation, a common device in High Renaissance painting to provide stability and balance to the scene. The background remains dark and indistinct, which pushes the figures forward and focuses attention on the interaction between the mother and the children. The inclusion of a book resting on a patterned surface at the base adds a domestic element to the allegorical subject matter.
Del Sarto was known for his technical precision and his ability to capture naturalistic human forms. This work demonstrates his mastery of oil paint, particularly in the rendering of skin textures and the subtle play of light across the fabric. The painting is currently held in the collection of the Musée du Louvre in Paris. It remains a clear example of the Florentine style, which prioritised clarity of form and harmonious proportions. The work avoids excessive ornamentation, relying instead on the physical presence of the figures to convey its meaning. The composition is structured, yet the expressions of the children introduce a sense of gentle movement to the scene.
