A classic Ukiyo-e woodblock print by Utagawa Hiroshige, capturing the seasonal beauty of cherry blossoms along the Sumida River in Edo.
This woodblock print by Utagawa Hiroshige depicts a seasonal scene along the Sumida River in Edo, modern-day Tokyo. It belongs to the series Famous Places in Edo, a collection that documents the geography and social life of the city during the nineteenth century. The composition focuses on the gentle slope of the riverbank, where cherry trees are shown in bloom. Small groups of figures gather beneath the trees, observing the blossoms, while boats navigate the water below.
Hiroshige uses a balanced colour palette, dominated by the deep blue of the river and the soft pinks of the cherry blossoms. The print demonstrates his approach to spatial depth, using the river to draw the eye toward the distant horizon. The inclusion of small boats and figures on the water provides a sense of scale and daily activity. The print is characteristic of the Ukiyo-e tradition, which prioritised clear outlines and flat areas of colour to convey atmosphere and place.
The Sumida River was a popular destination for residents of Edo, particularly during the spring. Hiroshige captures the quiet observation of nature that defined these outings. The print reflects the technical precision of the woodblock medium, with distinct blocks used for each colour layer. The cartouche in the upper right corner identifies the series and the specific location, a standard feature of topographical prints from this period. This work offers a view into the aesthetic preferences of the Edo period, where the observation of seasonal change was a central theme in visual art.
