A 1515 etching by Albrecht Dürer depicting the Man of Sorrows, showcasing the artist's mastery of line and devotional subject matter.
This etching by Albrecht Dürer, dated 1515, depicts the Man of Sorrows, a devotional subject showing Christ seated in contemplation of his impending sacrifice. Dürer employs his characteristic precision to render the figure, focusing on the anatomical structure and the emotive weight of the pose. Christ sits upon a stone block, holding the instruments of his passion, including the scourge and the bundle of rods. A crown of thorns rests upon his head, surrounded by a radiating nimbus that draws the eye to his sorrowful expression.
The composition is defined by the economy of line. Dürer uses varied hatching techniques to create volume and shadow, particularly within the folds of the drapery and the musculature of the torso. The background remains sparse, ensuring the focus stays on the central figure. This work belongs to a period when Dürer experimented with etching, a medium that allowed for a more fluid, painterly approach compared to the rigid requirements of engraving. The date 1515 is inscribed at the bottom, alongside the artist's famous monogram, which serves as a mark of his authorship and technical control.
As a devotional image, this print was intended for private reflection. It captures a moment of stillness before the crucifixion, inviting the viewer to consider the physical and spiritual suffering of the subject. The clarity of the lines and the balance of the composition demonstrate Dürer's mastery of printmaking. His ability to convey complex theological concepts through simple, direct visual language remains a hallmark of his career. This piece provides an insight into the technical capabilities of early sixteenth-century printmaking and the personal piety that informed much of Dürer's output during this era.
