Description
A semi-abstract composition by French Cubist Jacques Villon, featuring fragmented forms and a muted palette of greens, browns, and whites. The work exemplifies Villon's analytical approach to form and colour.
Jacques Villon, born Gaston Émile Duchamp, was a French Cubist and abstract painter, also known for his printmaking. He was the brother of artists Marcel Duchamp and Suzanne Duchamp-Crotti. Villon adopted his pseudonym in homage to the poet François Villon. He began his artistic career as a caricaturist and illustrator, but later became a major figure in the development of Cubism. He exhibited at the Salon d'Automne and the Section d'Or, becoming recognised for his analytical approach to form and colour. 'Composition abstraite' presents a semi-abstract arrangement of forms and colours. The composition features a palette of greens, browns, and whites, applied in short, hatched strokes. The upper portion of the work suggests foliage or a canopy, while the lower section contains a horizontal brown shape, possibly a table or architectural element. A pale yellow, circular shape hangs from the brown form, adding a point of interest. The overall effect is one of fragmented representation, typical of Villon's Cubist style.
