Dalet Chet is a representative work from the series of paintings Morris Louis produced between 1957 and 1959. These works are defined by the artist's technique of pouring thinned acrylic resin paint, known as Magna, onto unprimed and untreated canvas. By tilting the canvas, Louis allowed the pigment to flow in controlled directions, creating translucent veils of colour that soak into the fabric rather than sitting on the surface.

In this specific composition, three distinct vertical bands of colour dominate the frame. The application of the paint results in a soft, feathered edge where the pigment meets the raw canvas. This method removes the physical evidence of the brush, shifting the focus entirely to the interaction of colour and the physical properties of the medium. The title, Dalet Chet, refers to letters in the Hebrew alphabet, a naming convention Louis adopted for this series to avoid descriptive titles that might distract from the purely visual experience of the work.

Louis was a central figure in the Washington Color School. His approach to painting moved away from the gestural marks of earlier abstract expressionists, favouring instead the optical effects of pure colour. The transparency of the layers allows for subtle shifts in tone where the colours overlap, creating a sense of depth despite the flatness of the application. The negative space of the raw canvas acts as a structural element, framing the vertical forms and providing a neutral ground that allows the hues to remain clear and distinct. This work demonstrates the artist's interest in the relationship between the fluidity of paint and the rigid geometry of the canvas support.
