Dalet Tet is a representative work from the series of paintings Morris Louis produced between 1957 and 1959. This series is defined by the artist's technique of pouring thinned acrylic resin paint, known as Magna, onto unprimed canvas. By tilting the canvas, Louis allowed the pigment to flow in controlled directions, creating translucent veils of colour that soak into the fabric rather than sitting on the surface.

In this specific composition, the central mass of deep, dark pigment dominates the visual field. The edges of the colour field reveal the raw canvas, creating a stark contrast between the saturated centre and the negative space surrounding it. The title, Dalet Tet, refers to the Hebrew alphabet, a naming convention Louis adopted for this series. The work avoids traditional brushwork, focusing instead on the physical properties of the paint and the interaction between the liquid medium and the weave of the canvas.

Louis was a central figure in the Washington Color School. His approach to painting removed the artist's hand from the final image, prioritising the purity of colour and the flatness of the picture plane.
