A detailed 1695 mezzotint by Cornelis Dusart depicting a lively, dancing couple in a characteristic Dutch Golden Age genre scene.
This mezzotint by Cornelis Dusart, dated 1695, captures a moment of boisterous revelry. Dusart, a pupil of Adriaen van Ostade, focused his practice on the lives of the lower classes, often depicting peasants in taverns or engaged in rural festivities. This work is characteristic of his interest in the grotesque and the expressive nature of his subjects.
The composition features a couple in mid-dance, their postures exaggerated to convey movement and intoxication. The man holds a bottle aloft, while the woman balances a small bag or object on her head. Their clothing is rendered with attention to texture, showing the rough fabrics typical of the period. In the background, a ship is visible on the water, providing a contrast between the rowdy foreground figures and the maritime setting. The use of mezzotint allows for a range of tonal values, creating deep shadows and soft highlights that define the forms of the figures against the darker environment.
Dusart was a master of this printmaking technique, which enabled him to achieve a painterly quality in his graphic work. The figures are depicted with a sense of humour, reflecting the contemporary Dutch fascination with genre scenes that explored human folly and social behaviour. The print provides a window into the visual culture of the late seventeenth century, where such depictions were popular among collectors who appreciated the technical skill involved in the mezzotint process. The work remains a fine example of the period's interest in the everyday lives of common people, presented with a blend of realism and caricature.
