A detailed sixteenth-century engraving by Lucas van Leyden depicting the biblical scene of Salome presenting the head of Saint John the Baptist.
This engraving by Lucas van Leyden depicts the biblical narrative of Salome, the daughter of Herodias, presenting the severed head of Saint John the Baptist to her mother and King Herod. Van Leyden, a master of the Northern Renaissance, employs a sophisticated use of line to define the figures and the architectural space. The composition is arranged around a central table, where the figures of Herod and Herodias are seated, while Salome stands to the right, offering the platter.
The artist demonstrates his technical skill through the varied hatching patterns, which create a sense of volume in the heavy drapery of the garments and depth within the interior setting. The figures are dressed in contemporary sixteenth-century attire, a common practice in Northern European art of the period, which brings the historical event into the viewer's own time. A small, framed image hangs on the back wall, adding a layer of visual complexity to the scene. Through the window on the right, a distant landscape provides a contrast to the claustrophobic interior, offering a glimpse of the world outside the grim proceedings.
Van Leyden was known for his ability to integrate human emotion into his prints. Here, the expressions of the figures are restrained, yet the gravity of the moment is conveyed through their gestures and the physical weight of the platter. The work reflects the artist's interest in human psychology and his mastery of the burin, the tool used to cut lines into the copper plate. This print is a fine example of the narrative depth and technical precision that defined his career in Leiden. It remains a significant piece for those interested in the development of printmaking techniques during the early sixteenth century.
