A dramatic depiction of the 1923 heavyweight championship fight between Jack Dempsey and Luis Ángel Firpo, captured by American artist George Bellows.
George Bellows painted this work in 1924, depicting the heavyweight championship fight between Jack Dempsey and Luis Ángel Firpo. The match occurred at the Polo Grounds in New York City on 14 September 1923. Bellows was present at the event, and his composition captures the moment Firpo knocked Dempsey out of the ring.
The painting focuses on the physical exertion of the athletes. Dempsey is shown falling through the ropes, while Firpo stands in the ring, his body tense and ready. Bellows uses a dark, moody palette to suggest the atmosphere of the indoor arena, illuminated by artificial lights. The crowd is rendered in loose, gestural brushwork, which contrasts with the more defined figures of the boxers and the referee.
Bellows was a member of the Ashcan School, a group of artists who documented the realities of urban life in early twentieth-century America. His interest in boxing matches provided a subject that allowed him to explore human movement and raw energy. The composition is structured to lead the eye across the canvas, following the trajectory of the falling boxer. The ropes of the ring create a geometric grid that divides the space, adding a sense of tension to the scene. This work is held in the collection of the Whitney Museum of American Art in New York.
