A 1925 portrait by American artist George Luks, depicting a young girl in a dark tunic against a muted background.
George Luks, a member of the Ashcan School, painted this portrait of Miss Ruth Breslin in 1925. The work reflects his characteristic approach to portraiture, which often favoured direct observation and a swift, painterly application of pigment. Luks was known for his interest in the urban experience and the people of New York, yet his portraits of children often possess a quiet, contemplative quality that differs from his more boisterous street scenes.
In this composition, the young subject is positioned against a dark, indistinct background. This choice of setting directs the viewer's attention to the sitter's face, which is illuminated with a soft, warm light. The girl wears a dark, sleeveless tunic over a patterned blouse, the sleeves of which feature a rhythmic, geometric design. Her expression is neutral, suggesting a moment of stillness captured by the artist. To the lower left, a small vase containing a few blossoms provides a subtle point of colour, balancing the composition and adding a domestic touch to the otherwise stark environment.
Luks employs a confident brushwork style, visible in the handling of the fabric and the subtle modelling of the girl's features. The palette is restrained, relying on deep tones to create a sense of depth and focus. By 1925, Luks had moved away from the darker, mud-toned palette of his earlier career, adopting a slightly brighter approach while maintaining his commitment to realistic representation. The painting remains a clear example of his ability to capture the personality of a sitter through economical means, avoiding unnecessary detail in favour of capturing a specific mood or presence. The signature of the artist and the date are visible in the lower corners, confirming the work's provenance within his mature period.
