A reproduction of a section from the mural cycle The Epic of American Civilization by Mexican artist José Clemente Orozco, depicting the departure of Quetzalcoatl.
This work is a section of the larger mural cycle titled The Epic of American Civilization, located at Dartmouth College in New Hampshire. José Clemente Orozco, a primary figure in the Mexican Muralist movement, executed this series between 1932 and 1934. The mural depicts the departure of the deity Quetzalcoatl, a figure central to Mesoamerican mythology, who is often represented as a feathered serpent. In this composition, Orozco presents the deity as a bearded, white-robed figure, departing across the sea while surrounded by serpent forms. The imagery draws upon pre-Columbian history and mythology, reinterpreting these narratives through a modern, expressionistic lens.
Orozco employs a palette dominated by deep blues, earthy browns, and stark whites to convey the drama of the scene. The figures are rendered with a sense of urgency and physical tension, characteristic of the artist's approach to human form and historical narrative. Unlike the more decorative or idealistic approaches of his contemporaries, Orozco focused on the raw, often violent nature of historical change. The composition is dynamic, with the movement of the water and the serpentine shapes creating a sense of instability and transition. This work reflects the artist's interest in the cyclical nature of history and the clash between indigenous traditions and external forces. The mural remains a significant example of public art from the early twentieth century, demonstrating the capacity of the medium to communicate complex cultural and historical themes on a grand scale. The print captures the texture and tonal depth of the original fresco, preserving the stark contrasts and the expressive brushwork that define Orozco's style.
