A charming ukiyo-e woodblock print by Isoda Koryūsai, depicting a domestic scene that playfully reimagines the deity Hotei through the figures of a woman and children.
This woodblock print by Isoda Koryūsai depicts a playful domestic scene, subverting the traditional iconography of the Seven Lucky Gods. Hotei, typically represented as a rotund, jovial monk carrying a large cloth sack, appears here in a transformed state. The composition features a woman interacting with children who mimic the attributes of the deity, blending mythological themes with the everyday life of the Edo period.
Koryūsai, a former samurai who became a prolific printmaker, demonstrates his skill in balancing narrative elements with decorative patterns. The figures are arranged within a domestic interior, defined by tatami mats and sliding screens. The artist employs a muted colour palette, characteristic of the mid-Edo period, where soft ochres, muted reds, and greens create a harmonious atmosphere. The lines are precise and controlled, typical of the ukiyo-e style, which prioritised clarity and graphic impact. The children, dressed in patterned robes, engage with the central female figure, their gestures suggesting a lighthearted moment of play. The inclusion of the pine motif on the screen adds a layer of symbolic depth, often associated with longevity and endurance in Japanese art.
This work belongs to a series exploring the Seven Lucky Gods through the lens of contemporary genre painting. By placing these figures in a mundane setting, Koryūsai brings the divine down to the human level, a common practice in the ukiyo-e tradition. The print reflects the aesthetic values of the time, where the beauty of line and the balance of space were as important as the subject matter itself. The composition remains flat, focusing on the arrangement of figures and textiles rather than three-dimensional depth, which allows the viewer to appreciate the graphic quality of the robes and the surrounding architecture.
