Richard Gerstl produced this work during a brief, intense period of artistic activity in Vienna. The painting depicts two figures, often identified as the artist himself and Mathilde Schoenberg, set against a raw, energetic backdrop of green. Gerstl rejected the polished academic style prevalent in the Vienna Secession, opting instead for a visceral application of paint that prioritises emotional immediacy over formal precision. The brushwork is heavy and deliberate, creating a textured surface that captures light and shadow through colour rather than traditional modelling.
