Description

A detailed reproduction of a seventeenth-century Persian illuminated manuscript page from the Shahnama, featuring gold leaf and traditional Nasta'liq calligraphy.

This double title page originates from a manuscript of the Shahnama, the epic poem by the Persian poet Firdausi. The work displays the technical precision characteristic of seventeenth-century Persian book arts. The composition is symmetrical, featuring two facing pages that mirror one another in structure and decorative programme.

The central panels contain Nasta'liq script, a calligraphic style favoured for literary texts in the Persianate world. These panels are framed by multiple borders, which utilise a palette of lapis lazuli blue, gold, and ochre. The illumination includes floral motifs and arabesque patterns, which are rendered with fine brushwork. The outer margins are decorated with delicate, sparse floral sprays, providing a sense of balance to the dense ornamentation of the inner frames.

Such pages were designed to introduce the reader to the epic narrative, which chronicles the history and mythology of pre-Islamic Persia. The use of gold leaf and high-quality pigments indicates that this manuscript was produced for a patron of significant means. The geometric precision of the borders and the fluidity of the script demonstrate the high level of training required by the court workshops of the period. This print captures the physical condition of the original manuscript, including the subtle ageing of the paper and the application of gold leaf, which remains a defining feature of the Safavid aesthetic. The work functions as a study in balance, colour harmony, and the integration of text with decorative art.
