A detailed woodblock print by Utagawa Hiroshige II showing a Western ship anchored off the coast of Tsushima, from the series One Hundred Famous Views of Various Provinces.
This woodblock print by Utagawa Hiroshige II depicts a Western-style vessel anchored near the island of Tsushima. The work belongs to the series 'Shokoku Meisho Hyakkei' (One Hundred Famous Views of Various Provinces), a project that followed the tradition of earlier topographical print series. The composition balances the imposing scale of the foreign ship against the rugged, natural coastline of the Japanese island.
The artist employs a clear, graphic approach to the ship, detailing the rigging and hull structure with precision. In contrast, the foreground features stylised, cresting waves rendered in the classic Ukiyo-e manner, using layered blocks of blue pigment to suggest movement. The sky transitions from a deep indigo at the top to a pale, warm horizon, a technique often used in Japanese prints to denote the time of day or atmospheric conditions. A solitary pine tree clings to the cliffside, providing a vertical anchor for the right side of the image.
During the mid-19th century, the presence of foreign ships in Japanese waters was a subject of significant public interest. This print captures the curiosity surrounding international maritime contact during the final years of the Edo period. The inclusion of the Dutch ship, a common symbol of limited trade relations at the time, reflects the changing geopolitical environment. The print demonstrates the technical skill of the carvers and printers who worked with Hiroshige II, maintaining the aesthetic standards of the Utagawa school while documenting the shifting maritime activity around the Japanese archipelago.
