A classic Yokohama-e woodblock print by Utagawa Yoshitomi, depicting a Dutch merchant ship arriving in Japan during the late Edo period.
This woodblock print by Utagawa Yoshitomi depicts a Dutch vessel, a subject categorised within the Yokohama-e genre. These prints emerged during the late Edo period, following the opening of Yokohama port to international trade in 1859. They functioned as visual reports for a Japanese public fascinated by the arrival of foreigners, their technology, and their maritime vessels.
The composition features a large, multi-masted ship dominating the frame, rendered with a blend of traditional Japanese woodblock techniques and an attempt to capture Western maritime engineering. Sailors are shown navigating the rigging, while the hull displays a distinct red and black colour scheme. To the left, a stone fortification suggests a coastal trading post, likely referencing the Dutch presence at Dejima or the broader context of foreign concessions. The sky transitions from a deep blue at the top to a soft, sunset-like gradient near the horizon, a common stylistic choice in prints of this era to provide atmospheric depth.
Of particular interest are the decorative elements, such as the cartouche in the upper left corner featuring cherubic figures, which demonstrates the influence of imported Western imagery on Japanese artists. The print serves as a record of the cultural exchange occurring at the time, where the exotic nature of the 'Kōmō' (Red-Haired) foreigners was documented with curiosity. The lines are clean and precise, characteristic of the Utagawa school, while the palette relies on balanced tones to delineate the ship from the surrounding water and sky. This work provides a glimpse into the mid-nineteenth-century Japanese perspective on global maritime activity, capturing a moment of transition as the country engaged more directly with the wider world.
