A complex, multi-layered oil painting by Pavel Filonov, demonstrating his unique Analytical Art style through dense, mosaic-like brushwork and surreal imagery.
Pavel Filonov, a central figure in the Russian avant-garde, developed a unique methodology he termed Analytical Art. This approach prioritised the organic growth of a painting, where the artist builds the composition from small, cellular units rather than sketching a preliminary outline. In East and West, Filonov applies this philosophy to create a dense, multi-layered scene that resists simple narrative interpretation.
The composition features figures dressed in ornate, patterned garments that blend into the surrounding environment. The boundaries between the subjects and the background are blurred, as the artist uses a mosaic-like application of paint to unify the entire surface. The presence of fish at the base of the canvas adds a surreal, almost mythological quality to the work, suggesting a world where human and animal forms exist in a state of flux. Filonov avoids traditional perspective, opting instead for a flattened, crowded space that forces the viewer to engage with the individual details of the brushwork.
The colour palette is varied, incorporating earthy tones alongside brighter accents that draw the eye across the canvas. Filonov was known for his meticulous process, often spending years on a single work to ensure that every fragment of the painting possessed its own internal logic. This piece reflects his interest in the synthesis of disparate cultural symbols and his rejection of Western academic realism. By breaking down the image into these constituent parts, Filonov invites a closer inspection of the painting as a constructed object. The work remains a primary example of his attempt to capture the hidden, inner structure of reality through a rigorous, almost scientific application of paint.
