Description

A monochromatic ink painting by Reizei Tamechika depicting a historical imperial outing, executed in the classical Fukko Yamato-e style.

Reizei Tamechika was a central figure in the Fukko Yamato-e movement, a nineteenth-century revival of classical Japanese painting styles. This work depicts a historical imperial excursion to Funaokayama, a site associated with the Heian period. The composition follows the conventions of traditional narrative scrolls, employing a bird-eye perspective that allows the viewer to observe multiple groups of figures simultaneously across the terrain.

The ink work demonstrates the artist's technical command of the brush. Tamechika uses varying line weights to define the figures, the architecture of the ox-drawn carriage, and the natural forms of the pine trees. The figures, dressed in courtly attire, are arranged in small clusters, suggesting the social hierarchy and the specific activities of the imperial party. The negative space is utilised to represent the atmosphere of the hillside, creating a sense of distance without the need for heavy shading or colour.

As a practitioner of the Fukko Yamato-e style, Tamechika sought to reconnect with the aesthetic values of the Heian period. This painting reflects that interest through its subject matter and its restrained, monochromatic palette. The focus remains on the fluid movement of the ink and the clarity of the narrative elements. The scene captures a moment of courtly leisure, balancing the formality of the imperial procession with the organic shapes of the surrounding environment. This print offers a clear view of the brushwork and the compositional balance characteristic of Tamechika's output during his career in Kyoto.
