A traditional Japanese painting from the Tosa school depicting a narrative scene from the Tales of Ise, featuring courtly figures and deer.
This work belongs to the Tosa school, a lineage of painters associated with the Japanese imperial court. The Tosa style is defined by its adherence to Yamato-e traditions, which focus on Japanese subjects rather than Chinese themes. This painting depicts a scene from the Tales of Ise, a tenth-century collection of waka poetry and associated narratives. The composition employs the fukinuki-yatai technique, or blown-off roof, which allows the viewer to observe the interior activities of the court figures from an elevated perspective.
The figures are rendered with fine, precise lines, characteristic of the school's attention to detail in courtly attire. The women wear multi-layered silk robes, known as junihitoe, which are depicted with decorative patterns and muted colour palettes. The inclusion of deer in the foreground provides a connection to the natural world, a common motif in classical Japanese literature and art. The use of gold leaf at the top and bottom edges of the composition creates a sense of luxury and frames the narrative space, separating the earthly scene from the decorative background.
Such paintings were often produced as handscrolls or album leaves, intended for close inspection. The Tosa school maintained these stylistic conventions for centuries, ensuring a consistent aesthetic that prioritised clarity and narrative flow. The balance between the architectural elements, the human figures, and the natural environment reflects the refined sensibilities of the period. This print captures the delicate brushwork and the subtle interplay of colour that define the Tosa school's contribution to Japanese art history.
