The work is divided into two distinct registers, each documenting the adoption of Western-style architecture, fashion, and diplomatic protocol. The upper panel depicts a group of men in formal military uniforms standing before a Western-style building, complete with a fountain and manicured grounds. This scene reflects the rapid modernisation of Japanese public spaces and the integration of European aesthetic influences into the urban environment.
The lower panel presents an interior view of a palace reception. Here, figures are dressed in Victorian-era evening attire, including floor-length gowns and formal suits with sashes. The setting features heavy red curtains and ornate carpeting, elements that signify the adoption of Western diplomatic customs within the Japanese imperial court. The composition maintains the traditional flat perspective common to woodblock prints, yet the subject matter is entirely focused on the new, globalised identity of the Meiji state.
