A detailed Meiji-era woodblock triptych by Utagawa Kunitoshi, depicting an Imperial procession in Tokyo with a mix of traditional and Western elements.
This triptych woodblock print by Utagawa Kunitoshi depicts the formal procession of the Imperial Carriage in Meiji-era Tokyo. The scene captures the intersection of traditional Japanese architecture and Western-influenced modernisation. The stone walls of the palace moat and the distant silhouette of Mount Fuji provide a backdrop for the carriage, which is adorned with a golden phoenix. The figures are dressed in Western-style military uniforms, reflecting the rapid social and political shifts occurring in Japan during the late nineteenth century.
Kunitoshi, a student of the Utagawa school, utilised the traditional triptych format to convey the scale of the event. The composition is divided across three panels, allowing for a panoramic view of the procession as it crosses a bridge. The colour palette includes muted earth tones for the architecture and ground, contrasted by the saturated red of the carriage and the uniforms of the guards. The print serves as a record of the public displays of authority that defined the Meiji period, where the Emperor became a visible figure in the capital. The inclusion of gas lamps and Western-style carriages indicates the adoption of foreign technology, which was a common subject for artists documenting the changing urban environment of Tokyo. The print is a clear example of how traditional woodblock techniques were adapted to document contemporary historical events.
