A dreamlike 1918 composition by Paul Klee, featuring a central flower motif and celestial symbols set against a bold red background.
Flower Myth, painted by Paul Klee in 1918, is a characteristic example of the artist's exploration of symbolic imagery and colour theory. The composition is dominated by a saturated red field, which acts as a stage for various floating motifs. A central, stylized flower form sits at the base of the vertical frame, rendered with simple geometric shapes. Above this, a small, bird-like creature descends, adding a sense of narrative ambiguity to the scene.
Klee employs a flattened perspective, typical of his work during this period. The surrounding elements, including small trees, celestial bodies, and abstract markings, are distributed across the surface without regard for traditional spatial depth. This arrangement creates a dreamlike quality, where the relationship between the objects is governed by poetic logic rather than physical reality. The use of a primary red background forces the viewer to focus on the interplay of the blue, black, and white forms, which appear to hover in a state of suspension.
During the late 1910s, Klee was refining his approach to the relationship between line and colour. He often treated the canvas as a space for musical or rhythmic notation, where every mark serves a specific function within the whole. Flower Myth demonstrates this method, as the sparse placement of symbols allows each element to retain its individual identity while contributing to the overall atmosphere. The work reflects Klee's interest in the primitive and the childlike, stripping away unnecessary detail to reach a more direct form of expression. By avoiding realistic representation, he invites the viewer to interpret the scene through personal association, making the work an exercise in visual storytelling that remains open to multiple readings.
