A poignant 1863 etching by Ludovic Napoléon, Vicomte Lepic, depicting a shaggy dog holding a sign that pleads for charity.
This etching by Ludovic Napoléon, Vicomte Lepic, captures a poignant subject with technical precision. The work depicts a small, shaggy dog holding a sign in its mouth, a common trope in nineteenth-century French social commentary. The text on the sign reads, 'Donnes à qui prie et demande, Car au seuil de l'éternité, Il n'est qu'un mot que l'ange entende, Et qui fasse ouvrir, Charité.' This translates to a plea for charity, suggesting the dog acts as a proxy for the destitute.
Lepic, a skilled printmaker and associate of Edgar Degas, demonstrates his mastery of the etching needle here. The fur of the dog is rendered with fine, short strokes that create a sense of texture and volume. The contrast between the dark, dense lines of the animal's coat and the lighter, weathered surface of the sign provides a clear visual hierarchy. The dog's gaze is direct, engaging the viewer with a sense of melancholy that was characteristic of the period's interest in the plight of the urban poor.
As a member of the French aristocracy who pursued a career in the arts, Lepic often explored themes that bridged the gap between high society and the realities of street life. This print is an example of his ability to combine technical skill with narrative weight. The composition is tight, focusing entirely on the animal and its message, which removes any distracting background elements. The work remains a fine example of mid-nineteenth-century printmaking, showing the capacity of the medium to convey emotion through line and shadow alone. It is a study in both animal anatomy and social observation, presented with the clarity typical of Lepic's graphic output.
