A mature Cubist still life by Georges Braque, featuring fruit arranged on a white cloth with a focus on geometric form and spatial balance.
Georges Braque, a central figure in the development of Cubism, produced this work during his mature period. By 1925, his approach to the still life genre had moved away from the fragmented, monochromatic analysis of his earlier Analytic Cubist years. Instead, this composition demonstrates a more decorative and tactile engagement with the subject matter. The painting features a collection of fruit, including pears and grapes, arranged upon a white cloth that drapes over a table surface.
Braque employs a flattened perspective, where the objects appear to tilt towards the viewer, denying traditional depth. The forms are constructed through a combination of geometric simplification and subtle shifts in tone. The background, rendered in darker, textured greens, contrasts with the stark white of the tablecloth, which acts as a visual anchor for the composition. The inclusion of a fruit dish and a guitar-like form suggests the domestic environment often explored in his studio works.
His brushwork here is deliberate, balancing the solidity of the objects with the fluidity of the fabric. The palette remains grounded in earthy tones, punctuated by the cooler greens and the bright white of the cloth. This work reflects his interest in the physical presence of objects and the way they occupy space within a two-dimensional plane. Rather than attempting to replicate the appearance of the fruit, Braque constructs a visual equivalent, focusing on the relationship between the various shapes and the surrounding environment. The composition is balanced, with the verticality of the guitar form providing a counterpoint to the horizontal spread of the fruit and the table. It is a characteristic example of his later work, where the rigour of his earlier experiments is synthesised into a more harmonious and painterly style.
