Gamma Omicron - Morris Louis

Gamma Omicron is a representative example of the mature work of Morris Louis, a central figure in the Washington Color School. Created in 1960, this piece belongs to his Gamma series, which followed his better-known Veil paintings. In this series, Louis shifted his focus toward distinct, vertical bands of colour that flow down the canvas from the edges, leaving a significant expanse of unprimed white space in the centre.

The technique employed here involves the use of Magna, an early acrylic resin paint. Louis thinned the pigment to a consistency that allowed it to soak directly into the raw canvas fibres. This method eliminates the physical texture of brushstrokes, resulting in a surface where the colour appears to be part of the fabric itself. The bands of pigment, ranging from deep blues and greens on the left to warmer yellows, oranges, and reds on the right, maintain a sense of fluidity and movement despite their rigid, linear arrangement.

By allowing the paint to bleed and settle into the weave, Louis achieved a transparency that creates a sense of light emanating from within the work. The composition relies on the tension between the coloured streams and the vast, empty ground. This approach removes the traditional figure-ground relationship found in earlier painting traditions, as the colour and the support become a single entity. The work avoids representational imagery, instead inviting the viewer to engage with the physical properties of the paint and the interaction of the hues across the surface.
