This watercolour by August Macke depicts a garden scene with a blue gate, a white house, and a figure with a dog. The painting showcases Macke's use of bright colours and simplified forms, characteristic of his Expressionist style.
August Macke, a German Expressionist painter, created works characterised by their bright colours and simplified forms. Macke was a member of the German Expressionist group Der Blaue Reiter (The Blue Rider), which aimed to express spiritual truths through art. His career was cut short by his death in World War I at the age of 27. 'Gartentor' (Garden Gate) is a watercolour painting depicting a garden scene. A dark blue gate dominates the right side of the composition, with vertical bars of red and yellow adding colour. Behind the gate, a tree with reddish-brown foliage is visible. To the left, a white house with a red roof is partially obscured by a wooden fence. A figure in white stands near the fence, and a small dark animal, possibly a dog, is at their feet. The sky is a pale blue, and the overall atmosphere is light and airy, typical of Macke's style.
