A striking still life screenprint by Patrick Caulfield, 'Glazed Earthenware' features bold colours and simplified forms, typical of his Pop Art aesthetic. This print showcases kitchenware items in a graphic, stencil-like style.
Patrick Caulfield (1936-2005) was a British artist known for his bold, graphic paintings and prints. Caulfield's work often combines elements of Pop Art with a distinctive approach to still life and interior scenes. He frequently employed flat planes of colour, outlined in black, to create simplified, almost cartoon-like representations of everyday objects and environments. His style is characterised by its clean lines and a limited colour palette, which lends his work a sense of detachment and irony. 'Glazed Earthenware', created in 1978, exemplifies Caulfield's signature style. The screenprint depicts a still life arrangement featuring various kitchenware items, including glazed earthenware pots, jugs, and utensils, along with a fish and some fruit. The composition is rendered in a limited palette of red, white, and black, with a pale blue background. The objects are outlined with heavy black lines, giving them a graphic, almost stencil-like appearance. The flat, simplified forms and bold colours create a striking visual effect, typical of Caulfield's Pop Art aesthetic.
