A detailed seventeenth-century etching by Nicolaes Berchem the Elder, capturing a pastoral scene with cattle and a herdsman in the Dutch Golden Age style.
Nicolaes Berchem the Elder was a central figure in the Dutch Golden Age, known for his pastoral scenes that combined Italianate light with the meticulous observation of livestock. This etching demonstrates his technical command of the medium, using varied line weights to define the musculature of the cattle and the texture of the surrounding terrain. The composition is typical of his work, placing the animals in a naturalistic, unidealised setting that reflects the daily realities of rural life.
Berchem often included such candid details in his prints, which were popular among collectors for their authenticity and observational humour. The etching captures a quiet moment in the field, where a herdsman stands with his staff while his animals rest. The inclusion of the urinating cow is a characteristic touch of the period, where artists sought to document the mundane aspects of nature without the artifice of classical refinement. The etching is marked with the phrase 'cum Privilegio', indicating the artist had secured legal protection for his work against unauthorised copying, a common practice for successful printmakers in the seventeenth century.
Through his precise cross-hatching and delicate line work, Berchem creates a sense of volume and space. The figures are arranged to lead the eye across the scene, from the standing cow in the foreground to the distant herdsman and his flock. This print offers a glimpse into the artistic priorities of the Dutch Republic, where the study of animals and the rural environment held a significant place in the visual culture of the time. The work remains a fine example of the period's dedication to capturing the world with both technical rigour and a grounded, honest perspective.
