A woodblock print by Utagawa Kuniyoshi depicting Hara Gôemon Mototoki from the Chushingura story. The print showcases Kuniyoshi's dynamic style and attention to detail.
This woodblock print by Utagawa Kuniyoshi (1797-1861) depicts Hara Gôemon Mototoki, a figure from the Chushingura story, also known as the tale of the 47 Ronin. Kuniyoshi was a prominent artist of the Utagawa school during the late Edo period in Japan. He is celebrated for his dynamic and imaginative prints of warriors, mythical creatures, and historical events. His work often incorporated bold designs and dramatic compositions, influencing later generations of Japanese artists. The print shows Hara Gôemon Mototoki in a dynamic pose, wielding a sword and a staff. The figure is rendered with strong lines and detailed patterns, typical of Kuniyoshi's style. The print includes text that provides context to the story. The colours are well-preserved, with the black, white, and blue standing out against the neutral background. The composition is carefully balanced, drawing the viewer's eye to the central figure and his determined expression.
