He was associated with the Neue Künstlervereinigung München (New Artists' Association of Munich) and later Der Blaue Reiter (The Blue Rider) group, both significant movements in the development of Expressionism. The artist uses bold, non-naturalistic colours to define her features: yellow for the face and hands, green around the eyes, and a deep red for her headscarf.
