A dramatic Baroque depiction of Hercules battling the Lernaean Hydra, featuring the intense chiaroscuro and anatomical focus of Francisco de Zurbarán.
This work is part of a series commissioned for the Salón de Reinos in the Buen Retiro Palace, Madrid. Francisco de Zurbarán depicts the second labour of Hercules, where the hero confronts the multi-headed Lernaean Hydra. The composition employs tenebrism, a technique characteristic of the Spanish Baroque, where deep shadows contrast with illuminated figures to create a sense of physical volume and dramatic tension.
Hercules occupies the centre of the frame, his muscular form rendered with anatomical precision. He is shown in a dynamic pose, club raised to strike the beast. To his right, Iolaus assists him, holding a torch to cauterise the stumps of the severed heads. The darkness surrounding the figures serves to focus the viewer on the physical exertion of the combatants. The Hydra itself emerges from the gloom, its serpentine forms partially obscured by the lack of light, which adds to the sense of menace.
Zurbarán is better known for his religious subjects and still-life paintings, making this mythological commission a distinct departure from his usual output. The series was intended to glorify the Spanish monarchy by associating the king with the strength and virtues of the classical hero. The painting demonstrates the artist's ability to handle complex narrative scenes while maintaining the sculptural quality of his figures. The limited palette and the focus on the physical struggle reflect the artist's disciplined approach to composition. This print captures the stark lighting and the tactile quality of the original oil painting, preserving the sombre atmosphere of the scene.
