Robert Henri painted Herself in 1913 during one of his frequent visits to the west coast of Ireland. The subject is an elderly woman from Achill Island, a location that provided the artist with numerous models for his portraiture. Henri sought to capture the character of his sitters through direct observation and a rapid, gestural application of paint. His approach prioritised the immediate impression of the individual over formal academic finish.
The portrait displays the characteristic brushwork of the Ashcan School, with visible, confident strokes defining the folds of the woman's shawl and the texture of her clothing. The palette is restrained, relying on earthy tones of brown, grey, and muted pink, which allow the subject's face to emerge from the dark, indistinct background. The woman wears a traditional headscarf and a heavy shawl, garments that reflect the rural life of the region. Her expression is calm and direct, meeting the viewer with a sense of quiet dignity.
Henri was a central figure in American art during the early twentieth century, known for his advocacy of realism and his rejection of the polished, idealised styles favoured by the art establishment of the time.
