A refined hanging scroll painting by Sakai Ōho, featuring white hollyhocks and prince's-feather flowers in the traditional Japanese Rinpa style.
This hanging scroll by Sakai Ōho displays the characteristic refinement of the Rinpa school. The composition features a tall, vertical stalk of white hollyhocks, rendered with precise, clean lines against a neutral silk background. The artist balances the weight of the large, open blossoms with the delicate, arching stems of the prince's-feather flowers (Amaranthus) positioned to the left. A single, small butterfly provides a point of movement, adding a subtle narrative element to the botanical study.
Sakai Ōho was a student of Sakai Hōitsu, who was instrumental in reviving the decorative style of the earlier Edo-period masters. This work adheres to the Kacho-ga tradition, which focuses on the observation of birds and flowers. The artist employs a restrained palette, allowing the stark white of the petals and the deep green of the foliage to define the visual space. The application of colour is flat, avoiding heavy shading to maintain the graphic clarity associated with the Rinpa aesthetic. The silk support provides a warm, textured ground that complements the organic forms of the plants.
In this piece, the artist demonstrates a mastery of negative space. The arrangement is not crowded, allowing each element to occupy its own area of the composition. The signature and seal of the artist are placed near the base, grounding the verticality of the floral arrangement. This print captures the quiet observation of nature that defined the later years of the Edo period, offering a calm, balanced addition to any interior space. The work reflects the technical precision required for silk painting, where every brushstroke remains visible and permanent.
