This woodblock print originates from the 'Kokusho Gaho: Nihon Rekishi Gaho', a publication dedicated to documenting significant episodes from Japanese history through visual narratives. Matsumoto Fūko, a painter trained in the traditional Kano school, applied his expertise in historical subjects to these illustrations. The work depicts an architectural scene, likely a palace or temple complex, rendered with the characteristic isometric perspective common in Japanese historical scrolls and prints.
The composition is divided across two pages, showing a series of elevated walkways and tiered structures. Figures dressed in traditional court attire are positioned within the courtyards, carrying ceremonial standards. The use of line is precise and controlled, defining the structural elements of the buildings and the rhythmic placement of the figures.
