A woodblock print from the 1742 Ehon Kaikasen by Nishikawa Sukenobu, depicting domestic scenes and traditional Japanese life.
This woodblock print originates from the Ehon Kaikasen, or Illustrated Poems on Shells, a notable work by Nishikawa Sukenobu published in 1742. Sukenobu was a prolific artist based in Kyoto, known for his contributions to the development of the illustrated book format. His work often depicted the daily lives of townspeople, women, and domestic scenes with a focus on clarity and narrative flow.
The composition is divided into two distinct panels, typical of the ehon format. The right panel shows figures interacting within a domestic space, partially obscured by bamboo blinds, while the left panel presents a complementary scene of figures on a veranda. The lines are precise and clean, characteristic of the mid-Edo period woodblock printing technique. The figures wear traditional kimono with subtle patterns, and the architecture is rendered with simple, effective perspective.
Sukenobu was influential in the transition of Ukiyo-e from its early stages to a more refined, widely circulated medium. His books were intended for a broad audience, combining classical poetry with contemporary illustrations. This specific page demonstrates his ability to integrate text and image, where the calligraphy serves as a visual element alongside the figures. The use of negative space and the balanced arrangement of the characters reflect the aesthetic priorities of the time. The print provides a glimpse into the domestic customs and fashion of 18th-century Japan, captured through the lens of a master illustrator. The paper shows the natural ageing expected of a document from this period, adding to its historical character.
