A lithograph by Pierre Bonnard from his 1902 series for the pastoral romance Daphnis and Chloë, featuring soft, atmospheric mark-making.
This lithograph by Pierre Bonnard originates from the 1902 edition of Longus's ancient Greek romance, Daphnis and Chloë, published by Ambroise Vollard. Bonnard, a member of the Nabis group, approached the project with a focus on atmosphere rather than strict narrative realism. His technique relies on soft, gestural marks that suggest form through light and shadow, creating a dreamlike quality that aligns with the pastoral themes of the text.
The composition features two tall, dark forms framing a central clearing. These vertical elements provide a sense of enclosure, drawing the eye toward the middle ground where the suggestion of a structure or altar appears. Bonnard uses a varied range of grey tones, achieved through the lithographic process, to build texture in the foliage and the ground. The mark-making is loose and spontaneous, reflecting the artist's interest in capturing a fleeting impression of the scene. By avoiding sharp outlines, he allows the viewer to perceive the environment as a unified, hazy space.
Bonnard's work on this commission demonstrates his ability to integrate illustration with the printed page. The image functions as a visual accompaniment to the prose, maintaining a balance between the graphic nature of the medium and the painterly quality of his style. The absence of rigid perspective contributes to the overall sense of quietude. This print is a characteristic example of Bonnard's graphic output during the early twentieth century, where he explored the expressive potential of black and white media to evoke mood and setting.
