An architectural study of the Roman Colosseum, rendered in black chalk and wash on blue paper by Charles Michel-Ange Challe in 1747.
Charles Michel-Ange Challe, a prominent French architect and draughtsman, produced this study during his time in Rome. The work captures the atmospheric decay of the Colosseum, focusing on the structural rhythm of the vaulted arches and the heavy masonry of the Roman ruins. Challe employs a sophisticated use of light and shadow, utilising the blue paper as a mid-tone to balance the deep black chalk strokes and the delicate white heightening.
The composition draws the viewer into the shadowed recesses of the structure, where a solitary figure sits, providing a sense of scale against the massive stone blocks. The drawing reflects the eighteenth-century fascination with classical antiquity, a period when artists travelled to Italy to document the remnants of the Roman Empire. Challe's training as an architect is evident in the precision of the perspective and the careful rendering of the stone textures.
Unlike the more dramatic, ruin-focused works of his contemporaries, this piece maintains a measured, observational quality. The use of grey wash softens the architectural lines, creating a sense of quietude within the ancient arena. The work serves as a record of the site as it appeared in the mid-eighteenth century, before later restoration efforts altered the appearance of the interior. This print captures the tonal nuances of the original drawing, preserving the interplay between the cool blue paper and the monochromatic media. It is a study of form, light, and the passage of time, rendered with the technical skill expected of a royal draughtsman.
