A 1663 architectural design by Pieter Jansz. Post for the interior of a Dutch state yacht, featuring maritime scenes and classical ornamentation.
This drawing by Pieter Jansz. Post, dated 1663, presents a design for the interior decoration of a Dutch state yacht. Post, a prominent architect and painter of the Dutch Golden Age, was known for his contributions to the Dutch Classicist style. This specific work illustrates a sophisticated arrangement intended for a ship's cabin, incorporating maritime themes alongside formal architectural elements.
The composition is oval in shape, reflecting the constraints of a ship's bulkhead or panel. At the centre, a fireplace or doorway is framed by classical pilasters and topped with a coat of arms, featuring a lion and the Latin inscription 'Vigilate Deo Confidentes'. Flanking this central feature are two vertical panels depicting marine scenes, showing various vessels on the water. These scenes are framed by decorative carvings, including figures of putti and military armour, which add a sense of grandeur to the confined space.
The drawing employs fine pen and ink lines to define the structure, with subtle watercolour washes applied to provide depth and texture. The use of gold and grey tones suggests a refined, opulent finish suitable for a vessel of state. The precision of the architectural lines contrasts with the fluid, atmospheric rendering of the sea and sky in the side panels. This work offers a glimpse into the high level of craftsmanship and aesthetic consideration applied to the interiors of seventeenth-century Dutch maritime vessels, where utility met the decorative ambitions of the era. The inclusion of the artist's signature and the date at the bottom confirms its provenance as a deliberate design study rather than a casual sketch.
