A formal 1724 portrait engraving by Bernard Picart of the Dutch statesman Johan de Witt, presented in a classical oval frame.
This engraving by Bernard Picart depicts Johan de Witt (1625-1672), the influential Dutch statesman who served as Grand Pensionary of Holland during the mid-seventeenth century. Picart, a French-born engraver who spent much of his career in Amsterdam, produced this portrait in 1724, decades after the subject's death. The work reflects the conventions of formal portraiture common to the period, presenting the sitter within an oval frame that mimics the appearance of a sculpted medallion.
Picart employs precise line work to define the facial features and the texture of the subject's long, flowing hair. The shading within the oval is achieved through dense cross-hatching, which creates a sense of volume and depth. The sitter is dressed in the sober, dark attire typical of a Dutch official, complete with a white collar that provides a sharp contrast to the darker tones of his coat. Below the portrait, the inscription identifies the subject as 'Jean de Wit, Conseiller Pensionnaire de Hollande', confirming his political role. The technical execution demonstrates Picart's mastery of the burin, a skill that made him one of the most sought-after printmakers in Europe during the early eighteenth century. This print is a fine example of the commemorative portraiture that helped preserve the memory of political figures in the Dutch Republic. The composition is balanced and restrained, focusing the viewer's attention on the character and status of the sitter.
