This six-panel folding screen, attributed to Kano Sanraku, depicts the legendary Jinshan Island and the scenic West Lake. Sanraku, a prominent figure of the Kano school, demonstrates his mastery of ink wash techniques, known as suibokuga, within this composition. The work balances solid forms with expansive negative space, a hallmark of the period's aesthetic preferences.
The scene unfolds across the panels with a rhythmic progression of craggy rock formations, architectural structures, and calm waters. Sanraku employs varying ink densities to suggest atmospheric depth, with distant mountains fading into the golden-toned paper.
