A detailed 17th-century etching of Jupiter by Stefano Della Bella, originally created as part of a mythological playing card series.
This etching by Stefano Della Bella depicts the Roman deity Jupiter, shown in his traditional guise as the king of the gods. The figure is seated upon an eagle, his primary attribute, while brandishing a thunderbolt. The composition is divided into two distinct sections: the upper portion features the dynamic, swirling lines characteristic of Della Bella's printmaking, while the lower portion contains a descriptive text in French, identifying the figure as the son of Saturn and Rhea who claimed the heavens as his domain. A small heart symbol at the base indicates the work's origin as part of a deck of playing cards.
Della Bella was a prolific Florentine printmaker who spent significant time in Paris under the patronage of Cardinal Richelieu. His work is noted for its technical precision and the fluidity of his line. This specific series demonstrates his ability to combine classical iconography with the functional requirements of a card game. The etching technique allows for a high degree of detail in the clouds and the eagle's plumage, creating a sense of movement despite the small scale of the plate. The inclusion of text within the frame serves both an educational and a decorative purpose, typical of seventeenth-century educational games designed for the aristocracy. The print reflects the period's fascination with classical mythology and the systematic categorisation of knowledge through visual media. Collectors of Baroque prints will recognise the artist's signature style in the expressive handling of the figure and the balanced use of negative space within the frame.
