Description
A serene woodblock print by Hasui Kawase depicting the Bentendo Shrine at Shimoda under the light of a full moon.
Hasui Kawase produced this woodblock print in 1937, capturing the quietude of the Bentendo Shrine in Kakizaki, Shimoda. As a leading figure of the Shin-hanga movement, Kawase sought to modernise the traditional Japanese print by incorporating Western techniques of light and atmosphere while maintaining the collaborative production process involving carvers and printers. The composition focuses on the shrine structure, positioned on a rocky outcrop overlooking the sea. A stone staircase leads upward, framed by the dark, silhouetted forms of trees. The scene is illuminated by a full moon, which casts a cool, blue light across the water and the sky. This nocturnal setting is characteristic of Kawase, who often explored the emotional resonance of twilight and moonlight in his depictions of the Japanese countryside. The print demonstrates a precise balance between the architectural elements of the shrine and the natural surroundings. The stone walls, the torii gate, and the steps are rendered with clean, defined lines, providing a structural anchor to the composition. In contrast, the water and the sky are treated with subtle colour gradations, known as bokashi, which create a sense of depth and atmospheric stillness. The palette is dominated by various shades of blue, ranging from deep indigo to pale cyan, which unify the scene and evoke the chill of a coastal night. Kawase travelled extensively throughout Japan to sketch locations, often returning to his studio to refine these observations into final designs. This print reflects his ability to transform a specific geographical site into a meditative image. The absence of human figures enhances the sense of solitude, allowing the viewer to focus on the interplay between the man-made shrine and the vast, quiet sea. It is a representative example of his technical skill in capturing the specific mood of a place at a particular moment in time.
