A detailed botanical study by Samuel Jessurun de Mesquita, 'Kraalpioen' features a seed pod rendered in delicate watercolour, showcasing the artist's skill in capturing natural forms.
Samuel Jessurun de Mesquita, a Dutch artist of Sephardic Jewish descent, is known for his graphic work, woodcuts, and lithographs. He taught graphic techniques at the Academy for Visual Arts in Amsterdam, where one of his students was M.C. Escher. His life ended tragically during the Second World War when he and his family were deported and murdered in Auschwitz. His work experienced a revival in the late 20th century. 'Kraalpioen' presents a detailed botanical study of the namesake plant. The composition is simple and direct, focusing on the plant's seed pod, which is split open to reveal black seeds and red arils. The artist's delicate watercolour technique captures the subtle variations in colour and texture, from the tan of the pod to the glossy black of the seeds. The plant is set against a pale background, and framed by a border with the title inscribed at the bottom.
