A serene woodblock print by Utagawa Hiroshige depicting the Kyobashi Bridge under a full moon, from the series One Hundred Famous Views of Edo.
This woodblock print by Utagawa Hiroshige is part of his celebrated series, One Hundred Famous Views of Edo. The composition depicts the Kyobashi Bridge at night, illuminated by a full moon. The scene captures a quiet moment in the capital, with figures crossing the arched bridge while a lone boatman navigates the canal below. The vertical orientation allows for a dramatic contrast between the dark, textured sky and the warm, golden tones of the bridge and water.
Hiroshige employs a sophisticated use of colour gradients, known as bokashi, to suggest the transition of light across the evening sky. The architectural lines of the bridge provide a strong geometric structure, which balances the organic forms of the water and the distant, shadowed buildings. The print demonstrates the artist's ability to render atmospheric conditions, such as the stillness of a moonlit night, through the medium of woodblock printing.
As a master of the Ukiyo-e tradition, Hiroshige focused on the everyday life of Edo, presenting scenes that were familiar to the residents of the city. This particular view of Kyobashi Bridge is noted for its evocative mood and technical precision. The inclusion of the cartouche in the upper right corner, containing the series title and the specific location, is a standard feature of this series. The work remains a primary example of how Japanese printmakers utilised the woodblock medium to explore light, shadow, and perspective in the mid-nineteenth century.
