A fine engraving by Jean Moyreau after Antoine Watteau, depicting a pastoral scene with a waterfall and resting figures.
This etching and engraving by Jean Moyreau, titled La Chute d'Eau, reproduces a painting by Antoine Watteau. It forms part of the Recueil Jullienne, a comprehensive collection of prints documenting the work of Watteau, commissioned by his friend and patron Jean de Jullienne. The print demonstrates the technical skill of Moyreau in translating the painterly qualities of the original oil work into the medium of copperplate engraving.
The composition features a pastoral scene set against a rocky outcrop where water cascades into a pool. In the foreground, a group of figures rests under the shade of trees, accompanied by a small flock of sheep and a dog. The scene evokes the idyllic, dreamlike quality often associated with the fêtes galantes of the period. In the distance, a structure sits atop a hill, providing a sense of scale and depth to the composition. The use of varied line weights and cross-hatching techniques allows for a range of textures, from the rough surface of the rocks to the soft foliage of the trees and the fluid movement of the water.
Jean Moyreau was a prolific engraver who worked extensively on the Jullienne project, ensuring that the compositions of Watteau reached a wider audience. This print captures the atmospheric light and the balanced arrangement of figures within a natural setting. The inclusion of bilingual text in French and Latin at the base of the print reflects the scholarly and international nature of the Jullienne collection. The work remains a primary source for understanding the original compositions of Watteau, many of which have since been lost or are in private collections. The print is presented here as a high-quality reproduction, preserving the fine detail of the original engraving process.
