A detailed 1887 woodblock print by Adachi Ginkō depicting women using sewing machines and traditional tools, capturing the modernisation of Meiji-era Japan.
This woodblock print by Adachi Ginkō, produced in 1887, captures a specific moment in the modernisation of Japan during the Meiji period. The scene depicts a group of women engaged in garment production, blending traditional Japanese postures with Western-style clothing and technology. The presence of a sewing machine, a relatively new import at the time, sits alongside manual tasks such as hand-stitching and ironing.
The composition is arranged as a triptych, a common format for Meiji-era prints that allowed for expansive narrative scenes. Each figure is positioned at a wooden table, creating a rhythmic, repetitive structure across the horizontal plane. The women wear elaborate dresses with ruffles and lace, reflecting the rapid adoption of European fashion trends among the urban elite and the burgeoning middle class in Tokyo.
Ginkō employs a clear, linear style typical of the period, using precise outlines to define the folds of fabric and the mechanical components of the sewing machine. The colour palette remains balanced, utilising muted tones for the furniture and background, which allows the brighter hues of the women's garments to emerge. The print serves as a visual record of the social shifts occurring in late 19th-century Japan, where domestic labour was increasingly influenced by industrial tools and globalised aesthetics.
As a practitioner of the Meiji-era woodblock tradition, Ginkō documented the transition from the Edo period to a modernised state. His work often focused on contemporary subjects, providing a window into the daily lives of citizens navigating these rapid changes. This print is a clear example of how traditional printmaking techniques were adapted to record the arrival of new technologies and the changing appearance of Japanese society.
