A late work by Vincent van Gogh, featuring a couple walking through a Provençal olive grove under a crescent moon, rendered with rhythmic, expressive brushwork.
Painted in May 1890, this work captures the surroundings of Saint-Rémy-de-Provence during the final months of the artist's life. The composition features a pair of figures walking through an olive grove, set against a sky dominated by a crescent moon. The artist employs his characteristic impasto technique, using rhythmic, directional brushstrokes to define the forms of the trees and the undulating terrain.
The colour palette is structured around the contrast between the cool, pale greens of the foreground and the deeper, saturated blues of the distant hills. Above, the sky transitions from a warm, golden horizon to a luminous, pale green expanse. The crescent moon, rendered in a bright, pale yellow, acts as a source of light that unifies the scene. The figures, depicted in simple, bold outlines, appear small in relation to the expansive natural environment, suggesting a sense of quiet observation.
This painting reflects the artist's preoccupation with the natural world and his ability to imbue ordinary scenes with a distinct emotional quality through colour and line. The olive trees, a recurring subject during his time in Saint-Rémy, are rendered with swirling, agitated marks that suggest movement and growth. The work demonstrates his mature style, where the application of paint is as much about the physical texture of the surface as it is about the representation of the subject matter. The balance between the structured, repetitive patterns of the foliage and the more fluid, atmospheric treatment of the sky creates a visual tension that is typical of his late period. This print captures the specific tonal shifts and the tactile quality of the original oil paint, allowing for a close examination of the artist's brushwork.
